Follow a question to its sources
Ask Perplexity "best email platform for small e-commerce brands" and read the citations. You'll typically find two or three affiliate comparison posts, a review-site category page, and maybe a Reddit thread. The engine's confident-sounding answer is largely a synthesis of those five tabs. ChatGPT and Gemini do the same for commercial questions; they're just quieter about the reading list.
This is the part that surprises brand teams: your beautifully argued product page is probably not in those tabs. For "best X" questions, engines treat third-party pages as more trustworthy than the brands being compared — the same logic a careful shopper uses, applied at scale.
The economy behind the pages
Comparison posts exist because affiliate commissions and ad revenue fund them. That has two consequences worth being clear-eyed about.
- Inclusion is earnable. These publishers update their posts, and many will genuinely evaluate a product that reaches out with a solid case (and yes, some have commercial programs — know which is which before you email).
- The posts go stale. A 2024 listicle keeps getting cited into 2026. If you shipped your best features last year, the internet's most-read description of you may predate them. Engines inherit that staleness with complete confidence.
Earning your way in, in order of leverage
- Win the pages already being cited. Run your category questions through the engines, collect every cited comparison post, and check each: are you in it, is your entry accurate, is it current? This list is finite and shockingly short — usually 10–20 pages control a category.
- Give reviewers something citable. Clear pricing, a real feature table, honest positioning against alternatives. Publishers writing roundups copy from what's easy to verify; make your facts the easiest.
- Publish your own comparison content — honestly. "X vs Y" pages on your domain do get retrieved, but only the even-handed ones survive contact with an engine's synthesis. A page that declares you the winner of every row reads as marketing to models trained on the entire internet's supply of marketing.
- Mind the forums. Reddit and niche communities are increasingly retrieved for authenticity. You can't astroturf your way in — engines have read a lot of astroturf — but genuine presence and happy customers talking is retrievable gold.
The defensive habit
Once you're in the shortlist-making pages, re-check them quarterly. Publishers reshuffle, competitors lobby, posts get rewritten. The brands that stay visible treat these 10–20 pages as owned media that happens to live on someone else's domain.
