What entity SEO means
Classic SEO optimized strings: get the right keywords on the page, earn links containing them, rank for the phrase. Entity SEO — also called entity-based SEO or entity optimization — optimizes things: it treats your brand as an entity, a distinct object machines can recognize, and works to make that entity unambiguous, well-described, and consistently connected everywhere machines encounter it.
The distinction matters because modern search and AI systems don't primarily match words; they resolve meaning. When an engine reads "Mercury," it must decide: the planet, the element, the insurance company, or the bank? That decision — entity resolution — depends on context and on how clearly each candidate entity is established. A brand that machines can't confidently resolve is a brand that quietly drops out of answers.
What a well-established entity looks like
A strong entity has three properties:
- One canonical identity. The same official name, description, category, and core facts appear on your site, your structured data, your social and directory profiles, Wikidata, and third-party coverage. Machines cross-reference; contradictions weaken confidence.
- Presence in the reference layer. Entries in major knowledge graphs — Google's Knowledge Graph, Wikidata — act as anchors that other systems, including LLMs trained on the same web, inherit.
- Rich relationships. Entities are defined by their connections: founded by whom, competes in which category, integrates with what. The more consistently those relationships appear across independent sources, the more confidently machines place you.
Why entity SEO matters for GEO
Large language models are, loosely, entity machines: their training data teaches them which names co-occur with which categories, attributes, and competitors. When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best project management tool for architects," the model retrieves and ranks entities associated with that need. A brand with a fuzzy, inconsistent footprint gets weaker associations — and weaker associations mean fewer mentions, wrong category placements, or confusion with a similarly named company.
Entity work also compounds at answer time. Retrieval-grounded engines disambiguate queries against knowledge graphs before searching; a clean entity means the engine retrieves pages about you, not your namesake.
Entity SEO in practice
The work is unglamorous consistency:
- Audit every place your brand is described — site,
Organizationmarkup, LinkedIn, G2, Crunchbase, directories, Wikidata — and eliminate contradictions in naming, category, and key facts. - Publish a definitive about page stating who you are, what you do, and for whom, marked up with schema markup and
sameAslinks tying your identities together. - Earn independent corroboration through digital PR — machines trust facts repeated by unrelated sources far more than self-description.
- Reinforce category relationships by appearing in comparisons, roundups, and reviews alongside the competitors you want to be associated with.
How you know it's working
Entity strength shows up as consistency in AI answers: engines describe you the same way, place you in the right category, and stop confusing you with others.
