What the competitor gap means
Absolute visibility numbers are hard to interpret: is appearing in 40% of AI answers good? The competitor gap answers the question that actually matters — compared to whom? It is the difference between your brand's AI visibility and a specific competitor's, measured on the identical set of prompts, engines, and time window. Positive gap: you're winning those answers. Negative gap: they are.
The gap can be computed on any shared metric — mention rate, share of voice, or a composite AI Visibility Score:
competitor gap = your metric − competitor's metric (same prompts, same period)
The "same prompts, same period" clause is the whole method. A gap computed from different questions or different weeks is noise wearing a number.
Why the gap is the metric that matters
Three reasons the gap earns its place above raw scores:
- It cancels out shared noise. Engines update, answer styles shift, categories get more or less crowded — these affect you and rivals alike. The difference between you is far more stable than either absolute number, so gap trends reflect real competitive movement.
- It's the executive question in one number. "Are we winning our category's AI answers?" is a gap question. Leadership doesn't need your mention rate; it needs to know whether the distance to the market leader is closing.
- It localizes the work. Decomposed per prompt and per engine, the gap becomes a to-do list: the prompts where a rival is named and you aren't are your recoverable ground, and studying what engines cite there tells you which sources to win.
Reading gap trends
The trend says more than the level:
| Pattern | Reading |
|---|---|
| Negative gap, narrowing | Your GEO work is landing — keep going |
| Positive gap, narrowing | A competitor is investing; find out where |
| Stable gap, both rising | Category answers are expanding — a tide, not a race won |
| Gap widening on one engine only | Source or retrieval shift specific to that engine — auditable |
Because AI answers vary run to run, single measurements of a gap are unreliable; only scheduled, repeated measurement — the prompt tracking discipline — separates trend from jitter.
How gap analysis works in practice
The method is symmetry: track competitors on your prompt panel, judged by the same criteria, in the same measurement passes. Every answer is scored for every tracked brand simultaneously, which makes the comparison fair by construction — no competitor is measured on friendlier questions. Brandflare's competitor tracking automates exactly this: head-to-head mention rates, share of voice, and gap trends per engine and per prompt.
Competitor gap vs share of voice
The two are siblings, not synonyms. Share of voice divides the category's total mentions into slices — a market-structure view of everyone at once. The competitor gap is pairwise and directional: you versus one named rival, with a sign and a trend. SOV tells you the shape of the race; the gap tells you whether you're catching the runner ahead of you — and the practical steps for closing it live in how to track competitors in AI answers.
