What a citation means in AI search
In AI search, a citation is the engine's receipt: a link attached to a claim in a generated answer, pointing at the web page that claim was drawn from. Perplexity pioneered the pattern with numbered footnotes on nearly every sentence; ChatGPT shows source links when it browses; Google AI Overviews attach supporting links to each section; Claude cites when web search is enabled. Wherever an engine grounds its answer in live retrieval, citations are how it shows its work.
A citation is different from a brand mention. A mention names your brand in the answer text; a citation uses your page as evidence. The two often travel together — the page an engine cites frequently supplies the brands it names — but they're tracked as separate signals, and each can occur without the other. A review site can be cited in an answer that names you (their content, your mention), or your blog can be cited in an answer about a general topic that never names you.
How engines choose what to cite
Citations are a byproduct of retrieval-augmented generation: the engine issues searches, reads the top results, and writes its answer from them, linking the passages it relied on. That makes citation selection a two-stage filter:
- Retrieval — your page must surface in the engine's background searches, which lean on conventional search indexes. Classic SEO fundamentals decide this stage.
- Selection — from what it retrieved, the model favors pages that answer the question directly, state specific verifiable facts, and read as authoritative. A page can rank, get retrieved, and still be passed over for a source that's easier to quote.
Content built for that second stage — direct answers high on the page, concrete numbers, clear entity markup — is the focus of content strategy for AI search.
Why citations matter for GEO
Being cited is the strongest position available in an AI answer, for three reasons:
- You supply the framing. When the engine writes from your page, your product descriptions and your comparisons shape the answer.
- It's the click that survives. In an otherwise zero-click medium, citations are the main referral path from AI answers to websites.
- It compounds. Cited pages tend to be re-retrieved, and grounded engines update fast — improve a page and it can appear in citations within days, far quicker than waiting on a model retrain.
How citations are tracked
Citation tracking records which domains appear as sources across a fixed prompt panel, per engine, over time — producing a citation rate alongside mention metrics. The revealing analysis is the gap list: prompts where competitors are named and the engines' cited sources — the roundups, review sites, and comparison posts doing the recommending — don't include you. Those sources are the literal reading list of your category's AI answers, and getting into them is among the highest-leverage moves in GEO.
